FONDAZIONE LISIO

October 2022

I was very fortunate to spend a week at the historic Fondazione Lisio in Florence, Italy, undertaking an intensive course on the study of historical techniques and technologies from Eva Basile. It was my first time to weave on Jacquard looms and create velvet pieces. This opportunity was enabled by the support of the Ian Potter Cultural Trust, to whom I'm very grateful.

SYMPOSIUM: STARTING AT ZERO

UNSW Galleries

30 April 2022

Bauhaus artist Anni Albers had an enduring interest in the material limitations of textiles and the possibilities these constraints offered. Encouraging her students to “start at the point of zero”, she advocated for practitioners to rethink the fundamentals of textiles and then test their boundaries—her approaches to materiality continue to influence practitioners today.

This one-day symposium brings together practitioners and thinkers to explore the vast potentials of fibre and textiles as both a material and subject in contemporary practice. The program features a keynote presentation from Antonia Syme AM, Director, Australian Tapestry Workshop, alongside a series of conversations with exhibiting artists, curators, and guest speakers. Discussions consider how contemporary artists draw on the influences of Minimalism through the grid, subvert gendered perceptions around craft, and explore the significance of textiles within material culture.

PLIABLE PLANES: EXPANDED TEXTILES & FIBRE PRACTICES

UNSW Galleries, Sydney

29 April - 17 July 2022

I'm so thrilled to be showing both solo and collaborative works with John Nixon for the Pliable Planes: Expanded Textiles & Fibre Practices exhibition, which draws together practitioners who reimagine practices in textiles and fibre art. The project takes its title from a 1957 essay by Bauhaus artist Anni Albers that sought to rethink the use of weaving through an architectural lens and interpret textiles as fundamentally structural and endlessly mutable.'

The exhibition will open on Friday 29 April, with an all day symposium to follow on Saturday 30 April Symposium: Starting at Zero, and will continue to tour until 2025.

A work from my Grid series will be included in this year's NGV Melbourne Design Week as part of the exhibition Material Culture curated by Marsha Golemac at At the Above on Gertrude Street, Collingwood. I'm so grateful to present my work alongside these artists and designers.

'This exhibition is a dedication to the ongoing evolution of ‘material culture’ – an attempt to expand on conversations surrounding why and how things are made, and what social, functional, or symbolic needs they satisfy. Featuring the work of 16 designers, makers and artists, the exhibition encourages participants and guests alike, to imagine a world where yesterday’s ideologies and tomorrow’s innovation can coexist.'

ZÈFIRO

2021

Designing a wine label has been a little dream of mine for a long time, which is why I am very pleased to share that one of my collaged drawings now has its place on a bottle of pinot noir called Zèfiro.

Zèfiro is the name of a breeze which blows from the West in Italy, commonly known as the wind that brings sailors home. It is the first wine of Filippo Giorli made in Australia, and is the wine with which he will return to his hometown in Tuscany to continue the practice.

Now available in select wine bars and retailers in Melbourne.

B-SIDE

Blindside, Melbourne AU

4 November - 14 November 2020

This year the Blindside fundraising exhibition will be presented online. I'm delighted that Jordan Mitchell-Fletcher has invited me to be her 'B-Side' creating work that compliments hers. We will be presenting a work each from our respective drawing practices, an area of our practices that is not often seen. Each drawing will be available for sale with part of the proceeds going towards the continued operation of Blindside. Though the exhibition is held annually, this year our local arts organisations will require great support given the implications of COVID-19 restrictions upon small businesses in Melbourne.
