PICTURES MADE OF WOOL

19.03.2019 - 23.03.2019

Studio 14, Gertrude Contemporary

21-31 High Street, Preston South AU

Curated by John Nixon

This exhibition brings together some works from my private collection, invited artists and other private collections. It does not privilege studio against home, art against craft or professional against amateur.

Knitting/weaving/macramé/construction/rug hooking/binding/and are the methods used for the making of these works. Their purpose and meaning is aesthetic. They are pictures - abstract pictures, “pictures made of wool.” Here wool is used as the common material and the individual artists use different and personal methods for the hand making of their ‘pictures’ in this exhibition.
These structures using line through rules of making allow each artist to find individual expression and creativity. No two look the same. The works are constructed through line, grid and mass to form different visual outcomes.

The pictures are interwoven with their own materiality - line by line - the artists taking pride in the making of a decorative object to be looked at. The works are small and portable – made both in studios and at home. The works are made in private time – in effect, to gain private time – or alternatively in a more social setting made amongst the company of friends.

The exhibition is a site of sharing
– please enjoy.
